Special Hint: As I'm sure those of you who have ever used any plastic-spoke fan know, repeated "flicking" of the fan will cause a spoke to break. It is always the same spoke. There is a very simple fix for this that will also make the fan stronger. Simply glue the broken spoke to the one next to it on the end. It will not break again and it will be much stronger. Works every time!
These days, many shoe companies are offering pointe shoes in different colors. Unfortunately, the wait is usually quite long. But, don't worry, Tutu.com has a better solution:
We Dye Pointe Shoes!
and our turn-around time is usually less than two weeks.
We are happy to dye pointe shoes for you. Cost is $25/pr. Most any color is available. You can either buy the shoes from us, or send us shoes you have bought elsewhere. We use a dye specifically formulated for satin shoes. For best results, send shoes that are new or have only been worn once or twice. Old, very-used pointe shoes do not dye quite as well as new shoes do, and can end up with streaks and messy shading where dirty.

The White version is easily dyed. This is a really large applique. So large, that various shapes can be cut apart and used in different configurations on both the plate and bodice. A very versatile applique! The White dyes beautifully! We used 3 of them to make a gorgeous Lilac Fairy recently. Two were used "as is" and one was cut apart and used partly for the bodice and partly on the plate (with the other two) We also used FF3721-CRIPL (above) center front on the plate. It was a very quick and easy plate to make!

We send you the unfinished bodice with the materials needed to finish it (rigelene or bones and bone casing, cording or bias tape, hook and eye tape or individual hooks and eyes), AND full instructions with pictures. You then fit the dancer and make any changes to the seams, then finish the bodice. The point is, you get to fit the bodice BEFORE it is finished, ensuring a perfect fit. You also do not have to make or alter a pattern, do the cutting or sew it together.
This saves you both time and money - these unfinished bodices cost 1/2 what our finished bodices cost.
For example, a finished 6- or 8-piece bodice runs $100. The unfinished version is only $50.
A finished 10-piece bodice runs $125. Unfinished is $65.

Tutu Panties, with or without the small panty and butt ruffles attached
Several of you have asked us to make these panties for you, so we decided that we would offer them to everyone. We can make the tutu panty for you - complete with leg casings, quilting, serged edges and with or without sewn-on ruffles lines. We can add the panty and butt ruffles (I know - they are really a bore to sew on....). We can either leave the panty flat so that you can easily attach your ruffles to it, OR we can sew up the back seam if you prefer to have the panty completed BEFORE sewing on the net (I know there are some of you out there who make your tutus that way!). Bodices!
Many of you have
asked us for these in the
past, so we thought we would offer them to everyone this year.
This is how it works: You send us measurements, or specify a standard size. We cut out the bodice and lining and sew it together, but we do not do the finish work -- adding bones, bias tape or cording, hooks and eyes.
This is how it works: You send us measurements, or specify a standard size. We cut out the bodice and lining and sew it together, but we do not do the finish work -- adding bones, bias tape or cording, hooks and eyes.
Shown: 10 piece unfinished bodice.
We send you the unfinished bodice with the materials needed to finish it (rigelene or bones and bone casing, cording or bias tape, hook and eye tape or individual hooks and eyes), AND full instructions with pictures. You then fit the dancer and make any changes to the seams, then finish the bodice. The point is, you get to fit the bodice BEFORE it is finished, ensuring a perfect fit. You also do not have to make or alter a pattern, do the cutting or sew it together.
This saves you both time and money - these unfinished bodices cost 1/2 what our finished bodices cost.
For example, a finished 6- or 8-piece bodice runs $100. The unfinished version is only $50.
A finished 10-piece bodice runs $125. Unfinished is $65.
A finished 12- or 16-piece bodice runs $150 to $175. Unfinished, would be $75 - $87.50.
A finished Peasant bodice runs $200 - $250. Unfinished, would be $100 - $125.

This elastic is domestically made and MUCH less expensive than the imported English stuff we used to have. Right now, while the Dollar is weak it is just too expensive to import elastic. The domestic elastic is not a plush like the imported was, but we have found that it works much better for our purposes (making rehearsal and other tutus adjustable). It is also great for use in many other costumes to make them more adjustable for different dancers. We have used it in pants for men, waistlines of Poet's Shirts, Romantic tutus, to attach bodices to tutus, etc.

Featured Costumers of
the Month!
This month, we have
two wonderful ladies to tell you about - Tracy Franke and Kathleen Wenzel.
We first met Kathleen Wenzel, of Indianapolis, a few years ago at the Charlotte, NC TutuSchool Seminars. Kathleen was quite an accomplished stitcher, but she lacked confidence since she had not done alot of ballet costuming at that time. A former lawyer, Kathleen was very disciplined, and carefully thought out each step before acting. Being the mother of a young ballet dancer was also helpful with gleening the knowledge necessary to build for the classical ballet.
Often times, when learning to make tutus, students will over-think the process. Kathleen was just such a student in the beginning. The process is quite detailed. It takes years to become truly proficient. At seminars, I talk alot about tutu-making as an art. As such, one must be intuitive, or learn to develop their intuitive side, in order to both become successful and to enjoy this very complicated process. You must be capable of both learning the rules and throwing them out. Kathleen is very analytical. For her, learning the rules was not a problem. She has a very quick, sharp mind. However, in the beginning, her mind was working against her, making her second guess everything. She was thinking way too much.
Over the years, I have watched as Kathleen has gone from over-analizing everything to becoming a true artist. It has been such a wonderful journey to watch. Last summer, Kathleen came to her third summer at TutuSchool. She designed and draped an incredibly beautiful peasant-style costume, inspired by an old Russian costume. To keep her mind sharp(haha - as if she needed that!) and give her something to really think about, I challenged Kathleen with an 8-layer, 24-gore-per-layer, Russian-style Romantic tutu. The other people in class doing this very tedius design, were having fits, mis-cutting, and were generally exhausted by the never-ending nature of the project. Kathleen, on the other hand, really enjoyed it. Her meticulousness and highly developed sense of organization really paid off - the result is one of the most beautiful gored tutus I have ever seen! I look forward to seeing what else Kathleen will do in the future. I would like to see her do some more serious pattern making, as I think she has the capacity to do some incredible work.

From Tracy: "I was a dancer when I was younger, and now take adult classes when I can. (I have two small children at home). I've sewn all my life and took some costume design classes at ASU (Arizona State University) while I was there. Now I'm in Albuquerque. My friend who was the Sugarplum at the time for New Mexico Ballet Co. needed a new tutu for their Nutcracker, so I bought your book and did some research. Mostly, I've done costumes for YAGP since then. A lot of the girls wanted to use tutu skirts that they already had, so I built new bodices for them. Now that the purchased tutus are more expensive, I've made a few more of the skirts following your book, and with practice, feel pretty happy with the results. The skirts I make are much nicer than the ones they used to buy. My latest tutu is for a dancer who is currently touring with "The Radio City Music Hall Christmas Show," in Pittsburgh and Seattle, as "Clara". She will compete at YAGP after the tour. We are all so proud of her!"

We
are adding to our rental inventory every day. And, if we
do
not have
what you need, we are happy to build it for you at no extra charge,
provided you give us enough time to do so. Allow 6-8 weeks if
we
have to build your rental costumes!
We also offer a "Decorate Your Own" Rental Option: A plain white, pink or black tutu with a net plate and net bodice overlay. YOU put your own decorations on the net plate and overlay, then hand-tack the whole thing to the tutu and bodice. When you are done, take the whole plate and overlay off, keep it, and send the undecorated, rental tutu back to us! This option is a less expensive option than renting one of our fully decorated tutus -- about 1/2 as much! It also allows you to personalize the costume to fit the needs of your show perfectly. Plus, isn't the decorating the most fun?

This fabulous competition is only in the US once every four years. We are very excited to be a part of the activities! This is a great opportunity to hone your tutu-making skills AND see some of the best dancers in the world perform. We will have the opportunity to see some amazing costumes both close up and on stage - allowing you to really work on your "distance eye," a very important thing to develop as a costumer.
Our Class Schedule will be as follows:
Monday, June 21st , 5pm to 10pm - Hand-wired Swarovski Tiaras
Tuesday, June 22nd - Friday, June 25th, 8am to 5pm daily - Classical Tutus and Bodices
There will be options for those who just want to work on tutu skirts and for those who just want to make a bodice, as well as options for all levels of expertise - beginning tutu-makers through professionals honing existing skills.
Thursday, June 24th - Friday, June 25th - "Project Tutu" -- Entrance fee: $300.
A fun and exciting 'Project Runway-style' competition, designed for the advanced tutu-maker. Contestants will receive a 'kit' of fabrics, from which they will make a classical tutu, complete with bodice. Names will be drawn to decide the order in which contestants will choose their 'bag of goodies'. Each bag will contain various nets, tulles, trims, etc. Details as to what you will be asked to create will be given to contestants AFTER they receive their kit. Each tutu maker will have a dancer (muse) model on which to fit their creation. Your design will be modeled by your dancer on Friday afternoon at a Runway Show open to the public. Winner will receive some fabulous prizes, including a $500 gift certificate to Tutu.Com and a photo shoot with Brian Mengini (check out his work at www.bmengini.com). Additional prizes TBA.
Hours:
Thursday, June 24th - 8am to midnight
Friday, June 25th - 7am to 3:00pm, with the Runway Show at 3:30pm.
All contestants will have to work quickly and creatively. This is a great way to really hone your talents! More information soon!

International Ballet Competition (IBC) Tutu Fashion Show Contest!
The competition is on - enter a photo of a tutu you have made - it can be classic, traditional... or wild! The deadline for admissions has been extended to March 15th, 2010. Post a photo on the Tutu.Com Facebook page under "Fan Photos". Our Guest Judges will choose 6 tutus from the photos. Those six contestants will be asked to send your tutus to us here at Tutu.Com. The Sweatshop Girls will make the final decision, based on construction and design.
Two of the six will be chosen to be included in the Tutu Fashion Show at the IBC!
And, the creators of those 2 tutus will be eligible to attend TutuSchool at the IBC for free!

It was a very busy fall season for us, with fashion tutus as well as stage tutus. Watch for Tutu.Com's designs in several fashion magazines - W Magazine, China Vogue, one of the European Vogues, and Teen Vogue. We were honored to be asked to send tutus and hope they made it into the magazines! We will let you know which magazines as soon as we know.

For now, it is MUCH easier for Claudia to get photos up there than onto the website, so she will be adding new photos weekly. Claudia, Zelda, and the Sweatshop girls blog regularly on Tutu.Com's Facebook page. They are available to answer costuming questions there, too. We have hundreds of photos up there already - tutus, tiaras, children's costumes, men's tunics, seminars. Lots of the photos are close-ups, showing how things are made. Take a look!
Also - we invite you all to put up photos of costumes you have made using our patterns, materials and other products. Several of you have already joined the fun and put photos up there. Videos are welcome, too, of costumes made using our patterns, books and supplies! You can also add videos of your favorite dancers performing in costumes made by you using Tutu.Com's products, or costumes made by Tutu.Com! We are very excited about this new venue and hope that you will all take advantage of it so that we can all see each others hard work and creativity! And -- we periodically offer special Facebook Fan discounts on fabrics, dancewear, tutus, etc. These Facebook Sales are usually good for one-day only, so be sure to check for specials daily. The last one was 30% off everything we sell! Lots of you took advantage of that one!

Join the Yahoo group called "TutuSchool", open to anyone who has ever come to one of our seminars. Ann-Margaret Holden of Richmond Ballet's Costume Shop started the group and many former TutuSchool attendees have already joined. There is already lots of great information being shared on this group. Please email Claudia if you are interested in joining (AND you have been to TutuSchool in the past!) and she will forward you the information.
ALSO! Vern Rowser has started a group on Facebook called "Tutu Crazy!"
This group is open to anyone who loves tutus and ballet costumes. Many TutuSchool graduates can be found there.

"The Classical Tutu Book" is
being revised!
Claudia has
finished writing and is now working on photographs.....
Look
for this book around............. well, sometime later.... This will be
the 3rd
time we
have done this, and will be the most
extensive revision we've ever performed. The revision will include full
color photos of the tutu-making
process, new and
expanded directions, and lots(!) of new information. Claudia
has spent the last
two years figuring out many other ways to make tutus (she's now up to 9
different ways to make a professional-quality tutu!), and she will be
adding
much of this information to the new book. If
you call on the phone to speak to her you may well be told she is not
here
-- we have decided that if we can keep her off the phone, then MAYBE
she will finally get this done....Pricing, additional details, and discounts for past purchasers will be announced as we get closer to publishing.
