It's still summer...but not for too much longer
with the relentless heat, I still love the summer. For us , it is
usually a time to take vacations, clean and organize, hold seminars,
etc. This year, being an IBC-Jackson year, has been extremely busy for
us. We went directly from making Spring performance season tutus
and costumes into making tutus for IBC competitors, packing and
organizing for TutuSchool seminars in Jackson and Charlotte, and putting together the
first ever Project Tutu Competition (more about this later!). It
has been a wild ride, but incredibly fun and exciting. You may have noticed that we did not do our usual summer newsletter. There simply was no extra time to organize it, what with spending two whirlwind weeks in Jackson at the IBC, then getting ready for Charlotte seminars. So, since we did not do a summer newsletter, we have some pretty great deals THIS month! As I am sure many of you are aware, Summer is Tutu Sale Time! Check below for some GREAT deals on tutus - rehearsal, performance, sample, rental, etc. We have many tutus ON SALE this month! We are also introducing some exciting, new patterns - a couple of bodices and a basque pattern, by Travis Halsey. We love Travis's designs - check him out at www.travishalsey.com. These patterns are advanced level "Costume Shop" patterns. They do not come with seam allowances - you will need to add your own, but this way, you have more control over the fit on your dancers. We are taking a Pre-Order list for Travis's patterns. Scroll down for more info. By popular demand, we have included a small section on trims this month. Although still not posted to our website, you can see many of our trims right here! Jessi and Michael are working hard to get the trims page posted and the appliques page updated on the Tutu.Com website. Scroll down to find some great deals on costumes and costume accessories, notions and specialty costuming items, fabrics, rhinestones and extras, dancewear and dancewear close-outs. This month's Dancewear Close-Outs offer many really great buys. Take a minute and look through the list of leotards, etc., some for as little as $9 or $10! The emphasis is on serious savings! We're sure you'll find just what you need in these Newsletter Specials to help you "Get the Job Done". And finally, I just want to thank all of you for being clients and friends of Tutu.Com. All of us in the "Sweatshop" really appreciate your support and kind words. We really DO have the best clients! I hope you all have had a magical summer, and will have a wonderful ballet season. Please join us on Facebook and Twitter. We have a great time and really enjoy all the pictures posted by our clients and friends. See "Company News" below for more info. Happy Costuming and Dancing, and try to stay cool (weather-wise and personally)! Claudia, Alexis, Savanah, Jessi, Christine, Sarah, Zelda, Melissa, Xavier, Brenda, Betsy and our summer interns - Mickayla, Nick, Diandrea, and Caroline, plus Carly our "Shop Dog" and Jake our resident Feline-In-Charge BY THE WAY: Some of you are working w-a-a-a-y too hard! If you're ordering online, by fax, or by mail and paying by credit-card, you DON'T have to figure out the Sale price for every item you order Just put the Coupon Code in the space provided on your order form - we'll find it and calculate the discount(s) for you. Besides, no charges are ever made to your credit card until we process your order for shipping. If you are paying by Paypal, we suggest you just place your order without payment, as 'Send a Request for Funds' (be sure to include the Coupon Code!), and we'll process your order and send you a Paypal Invoice for the Order Total prior to shipping. New - Plastic Hooping! ![]() Great for hooping any Classical Tutu, and perfect for creating "contemporary" styles like those shown above! Lightweight, but extremely strong. Since it has no metal in it, it won't leave rust stains on your costume. It can be bent into various shapes and then bent back to its original shape quite easily. It does not snap or break easily, but can be easily cut with wire cutters. And - you can melt the ends using a butane torch and fuse them together (SAFETY ALERT! Open Flame! Extreme Caution!). Once fused, it is so strong you cannot pull it apart! For use in classical tutus, we prefer to simply over-cross the ends a few inches and tape them together. In contemporary tutus, where we will not need to adjust the hoop, we prefer to either fuse the ends or use plastic connectors, in which we apply a little E6000 glue for a permanent hold. We have tested this hoop on several of our tutus this summer, and we love it! It is the hoop used in both Jessi's and Sarah's Sugar Plum designs pictured above. It is also used in the contemporary tutus pictured above. It can be spray painted with plastic spray paint, to match virtually any color tutu. Available by the 10-yard roll - Regular retail is $20 per roll 12-inch piece of plastic connector (cut into 1/2-inch pieces to use) - Regular retail is $1 per 12-inch piece Special Introductory Price: Take 10% off - $18 per 10-yard roll and $0.90 for the connector plastic. More details on the Specialty Patterns page at http://www.tutu.com/bks_ptrnsother.html We Dye Pointe Shoes! and our turn-around time is usually less than two weeks. ![]() We are happy to dye pointe shoes for you. Cost is $25/pr. Most any color is available. You can either buy the shoes from us, or send us shoes you have bought elsewhere. We use a dye specifically formulated for satin shoes. For best results, send shoes that are new or have only been worn once or twice. Old, very-used pointe shoes do not dye quite as well as new shoes do, and can end up with streaks and messy shading where dirty. Costumers - Looking for Something Special? PLEASE NOTE!! If you are looking for something special and can't find it anywhere, call us! We actually have a LOT of in-stock and on-shelf specialty items that aren't posted on the website. AND, Claudia is happy to shop around for you (shopping is her favorite thing to do!), and we ARE smack-dab in the middle of the southeastern textile district, not to mention our years-long ties to the (often hidden and frequently 'secret') New York and Los Angeles districts (plus a few European contacts). It has often happened that a client calls and requests a certain type of fabric, trim, applique, or other costuming type item, then Claudia finds it (she is such a good shopper!), and we end up liking it so much that it gets put into stock. Please do not ever be afraid to call and ask. That is what we are here for. If we can't find what you are looking for, we will let you know. Introducing Some Very Special New Patterns!! Claudia
likes nothing better than finding and nurturing talented, young
artists. Travis Halsey is one of the most talented costumers we have
met in quite some time. A master designer and pattern-maker, we are
very excited to introduce you to Travis and his work! And we are proud
to be the exclusive home of Travis Halsey's patterns! Check out Travis's
web page at www.travishalsey.com.
At present, Travis is on staff at the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago, working as Assistant to Marianne Marks, director of Joffrey's shop . If both of their names seem familiar, they should! Both Travis and Marianne were judges for Tutu.Com's IBC Tutu Fashion Show Contest last Spring. Watch for more patterns and some really neat products that will make your "Tutuing" life much easier, coming from Travis and Tutu.Com in the near future! PLEASE NOTE: These patterns are "Costume Shop" patterns. They were developed on measurements from professional dancers. Seam allowances have been left off, allowing you to have better control over the pattern by adding whatever seam allowances you prefer when cutting. At present, we do not have formal instructions with photographs available, but Travis has included his personal notes on the pattern sheets to help you, and as always, you can email Claudia if you need help. We are taking Pre-Print Orders for these patterns, at Special Introductory discounted prices. These prices wqn't be available after this Newsletter expires, so order now if you want them! The patterns are nearly print-ready, and will be available to ship as soon as we receive them from the printer. ** "Hollywood" Basque Pattern -- Introductory Priced at $18.00, or all three sizes for $50.00 Like all of Travis's patterns, this one has beautiful lines! Cut in 6 pieces, this basque fits like a glove! It extends a couple inches above the waistline, allowing for a better fit on dancers of different body lengths. The lines of the basque come to a point center front, and it sits slightly higher at the sides than the front or back, allowing for easy adjustment when attaching to a tutu so that the skirt will sit level on any body. It hugs the body, flattering every shape. Available in the following sizes: Small/Petite, which yields the following 3 waist (W) and high-hip (HH) sizes: (A) W=23.5 inches // HH= 28.75 inches (B) W=24 inches // HH = 29.25 inches (C) W= 24.5 inches // HH = 29.75 inches Medium, which yields the following 3 waist (W) and high-hip (HH) sizes: (A) W = 24 inches // HH = 29.5 inches (B) W = 25 inches // HH = 30.5 inches (C) W = 26 inches // HH = 31.5 inches Medium to Large/Tall, which yields the following 3 waist (W) and high-hip (HH) sizes: (A) W = 24.5 inches // HH = 29.75 inches (B) W = 26.25 inches // HH = 31.5 inches (C) W = 28 inches // HH = 33.25 inches ** 15-Piece "Regal" Bodice Pattern -- Introductory Priced at $22.50, or both sizes for $42.50 This is a beautiful bodice pattern. Travis has included a delicate, off-the-shoulder sleeve in the pattern, too. This pattern has hip pieces added to it, making it a longline bodice with a center front point! This is a great design! Add cording to some or all of the diagonal seams for a beautiful, flattering waistline on every dancer. Available in the following sizes: Small/Medium, which yields the following 3 waist (W) and high-hip (HH) sizes: (A) B = 29 inches // W = 23 inches // HH = 29 inches (B) B = 30 inches // W = 24 inches // HH = 30 inches (C) B = 31 inches // W = 25 inches // HH = 31 inches Medium Long/Tall, which yields the following 3 waist (W) and high-hip (HH) sizes: (A) B = 29.5 inches // W = 24 inches // HH = 30 inches (B) B + 31.5 inches // W = 25 inches // HH = 31 inches (C) B = 32.5 inches // W = 26 inches // HH = 32 inches ** 11-Piece "Elegant" Bodice Pattern -- Introductory Priced at $22.50 each, or all 3 sizes for $60.00 Another lovely bodice pattern! This pattern has 11 pieces, beautiful diagonally-cut lines, and comes to a point center front. The back is cut low, accentuating the beauty of the ballet dancer's back. Bodice is cut to finish just below the waist, with a little extra length at the back. As with the 15-Piece bodice pattern, Travis has cut a center front panel that can be used with the same top fabric as the rest of the bodice OR as a nude inset, taking the guessing out of adding a nude panel. Each pattern includes 2 sizes. Available in the following sizes: Petite/Extra Small, which yields the following 2 sizes: (A) Petite: Bust = 28.25 inches // W = 23 inches // Back Neck to W = 13.5 inches // Underarm to W = 7 inches (B) Extra Small: Bust = 30 inches // W = 24 inches // Back Neck to W = 14 inches // Underarm to W = 7 inches Small/Medium, which yields the following 2 sizes: (A) Small: Bust = 31 inches // W = 25 inches // Back Neck to W = 14.5 inches // Underarm to W = 7.5 inches (B) Medium: Bust = 32 inches // W = 26 inches // Back Neck to W = 15 inches // Underarm to W = 7.75 inches Medium-Long/Large, which yields the following 2 sizes: (A) M-L: Bust = 33.5 inches // W = 27 inches // Back Neck to W = 15.5 inches // Underarm to W = 8.25 inches (B) Large: Bust = 34.75 inches // W = 28 inches // Back Neck to W = 16.25 inches // Underarm to W = 8.5 inches This

In our continuing quest to make your tutu-life easier......
You asked for it and we can do it ..... Unfinished
Bodices! Many of you have
asked us for these in the
past, so we thought we would offer them to everyone this year. This is how it works: You send us measurements, or specify a standard size. We cut out the bodice and lining and sew it together, but we do not do the finish work -- adding bones, bias tape or cording, hooks and eyes. ![]() Shown: 10 piece unfinished bodice. We send you the unfinished bodice with the materials needed to finish it (rigelene, bias tape, hook and eye tape), AND full instructions with pictures. You then fit the dancer and make any changes to the seams, then finish the bodice. The point is, you get to fit the bodice BEFORE it is finished, ensuring a perfect fit. You also do not have to make or alter a pattern, do the cutting or sew it together. We can even make elasticized cording for you to add to the top edge, if you prefer that -- see below! This saves you both time and money - these unfinished bodices cost 1/2 what our finished bodices cost. For example, a finished 6- or 8-piece bodice runs $100. The unfinished version is only $50. A finished 10-piece bodice runs $125. Unfinished is $65. A finished 12- or 16-piece bodice runs $150 to $175. Unfinished, would be $75 - $87.50. A finished Peasant bodice runs $200 - $250. Unfinished, would be $100 - $125. Be sure to order early! Custom-Made Tutu.Com Basque Patterns! ![]() On Left, woven fbric basque. On Right, powernet (stretchy) basque. Right now, while the Dollar is weak it is just too expensive to import elastic. The domestic elastic is not a plush like the imported was, but we have found that it works much better for our purposes (making rehearsal and other tutus adjustable). It is also great for use in many other costumes to make them more adjustable for different dancers. We have used it in pants for men, waistlines of Poet's Shirts, Romantic tutus, to attach bodices to tutus, etc. Tutu.Com's

the Month!
This month, we have three very talented costumers to tell you about -
Travis Halsey, Cheryl Beasley, and Brenda Carr! I can't talk about Travis, Cheryl, or Brenda without talking about the first-ever Project Tutu Competition and the 2010 International Ballet Competition, held in Jackson, MS. So, this month, I'm going to change the Featured Costumer format somewhat, and tell you all about the IBC, Project Tutu, Travis, Cheryl, Brenda and all the other costumers, directors, judges, parents, and dancer/models who made it , by far, the highlight of any dance lovers summer. The USA - IBC only happens once every four years. The best dancers from around the world apply to compete. This year, only 119, out of the several hundred who applied, were chosen. About half of them competed in the Jr. Division, 15-18 year olds, and the other half competed in the Senior Division, 19 - 26 year olds. Tutu.Com is a sponsor. We donate a fully decorated, professional-quality tutu to each female gold medalist and a tunic to each male gold medalist. We also set up a booth from which we sold tutus, tiaras, dancewear, etc. and did free "costume triage" for the competitors. It was fun - long-time friend and client, Carole Klinko, from the Turks and Caicos, came with me and helped man the costume triage area. She flew to Charlotte and made the 10 hour drive from Charlotte to Jackson with me. Carole also competed in the Project Tutu Competition. She was one of 7 designers to compete. All did a fabulous job, having to make a performance-quality, fully decorated tutu in a total of 22 hours. Each designer was given a dancer's measurements from which to start. They were allowed to pick one of Tutu.Com's bodice patterns, but they had to make a major design change in the pattern. And that was only the beginning....There were several "glitches". ![]() First, 4 out of the 7 dancer/models did not show up at fitting time. Travis Halsey, from the Joffrey Ballet's shop, had come to Jackson to help me with the fashion shows and Project Tutu. He and I quickly found 4 more dancers. Unfortunately, they were not
the same size as the measurements from which the designers had been
working. During the last 5 hours, we told the designers that they
would also be expected to make a headpiece to match their tutu.
And we also told them that they would be expected to stand up and
talk about their creation during the Tutu Fashion Show. Needless
to say, nerves were frayed. But there was none of the nastiness
that you see on TV. The Project Tutu designers were suppor tive of
each other, sharing fabrics, trims, tips, and ideas. It was an
incredibly creative and exciting
atmosphere. At the same time, we were finishing up the last day
of the Basic Tutu Seminar. We had a great group of people for
that class -- all offered to be extra "hands" to help with hand-sewing
as the competitors came down to the wire. Our youngest member of
that tutu seminar was 16, and a fabulously talented stitcher.
She was making a tutu for her best friend, also 16 and the Bronze
medalist in the Junior Division - Mariana Layun Prado, of Mexico.I can't go any farther without telling you about Cheryl Beasley and Travis Halsey. As many of you know, Cheryl lives in Huntington Beach, CA. and has taught grading and bodice design classes at TutuSchool in CA., Charlotte, N C, and Secaucus, NJ. She is also responsible for
grading our patterns and design work/collaboration on several.
She was the calm in the storm of Project Tutu and the Tutu
Fashion Shows. Cheryl kept all the models for both of our fashion
shows calm, made sure they all had their headpieces securely on their
heads, dealt with parents questions, nervous directors, hungry
children, and generally kept everyone's frayed nerves under control.
We could not have done either fashion show or Project Tutu
without her. On top of all that, Cheryl had two stunning tutus in
the show, a beautiful turquoise le Corsaire and a hand-dyed white and
aqua "Tiffany" tutu that was commissioned by a photographer for a new
coffee table-style book. The Tiffany tutu has hundreds of
hand-sewn Swarovski crystals on it. Along with Carole and Travis,
Cheryl helped me do all the alterations so that the 25-plus tutus in
the show fit comfortably and beautifully. She also made some
last-minute headpieces.Tall and lanky Travis Halsey, grew up on a farm in South Dakota, now lives in Chicago and works for the Joffrey Ballet's costume shop. He is a wonderfully creative artist. As many of you know, Travis has designed a new "Hollywood" basque pattern and two new bodice patterns for Tutu.Com. These patterns are advanced-level, costume shop pa tterns. The lines are stunning. At present, we will be
selling the patterns without formal instructions or how-to pictures,
but the instructions with photographs are in the works. If you
are an experienced bodice maker, you will be fine with the copious
notes that Travis has included on the pattern sheets. As with all
bodice patterns, I recommend you make a muslin FIRST, as fit IS
everything when it comes to bodices and basques!Travis brought four tutus for our fashion shows - a burgundy/white/black Paquita, a very elegant white and gold Cinderella wedding tutu, a Coppelia doll tutu, made with bodice and peplum fabric designed by Travis on a computer, using a process called Sublimation that Cirque de Soleil uses, and, my favorite, a Carabosse tutu made for a man. It is the most amazing Carabosse I have ever seen, with enormous amounts of handwork. The bodice alone has probably around 100 tiny pieces of fabric mixed and matched to create the affect of ribs. The headpiece and sleeve pieces were built onto a custom-made body stocking so that there would be no worrying about pieces falling off during Carabosses rather energetic(to say the least) movements. Travis also helped with the basic tutu seminar we had going on the same week as Project Tutu. He shared some great ideas with the students and offered positve critiques. We, at Tutu.Com are thrilled to have Travis as part of our creative team! I think I am the luckiest person in the world to be able to work with all of these incredibly talented people. ![]() ![]() ![]() The guests for our fashion shows were really in for a fabulous treat. Not only did we have some of the most incredib le
tutus of modern day in the shows -- Holly Hynes' fabulous Diamonds
tutu, constructed at the famous Barbara Matera LTD. costume shop
in NY was graciously loaned to us
by the Kennedy Center; Tutu.Com handled the "birds" - Firebird,
Bluebird, White Swan and Black Swan, as well as the children's tutus;
Carole Klinko's fabulous upside-down flower tutu and her version of
Claudia's Firebird design; Brenda Smith's Black Swan; Ann-Margaret
Holden's Black and White tutu; Nancy Ford Gallegher's Jelly Fish tutu,
and Chris Garniewicz' black leather tutu, as well as the tutus designed
by Cheryl Beasley and Travis Halsey, were all in the show. We
also had some very special vintage tutus
by designers Oliver Messel, Andre' Levasseur, and David Walker, all
kindly loaned to us by Alun Jones. Alun also loaned some of his
fabulous tiaras to us. The young dancers were in awe. They
could not believe they were actually seeing, much less wearing tutus
that had been worn by such great ballerinas as Margo Fonteyn and Alicia Markova. It was really quite overwhelming
for us all. The first Tutu Fashion Show was supposed to be held during a luncheon. Unfortunately, the room designated for the luncheon fashion show was not big enough to hold the sold-out 50 people signed up for lunch AND the models, not to mention the over 120 more people on the waiting list! Working with the fabulous staff of the Jackson-Marriott, we decided to rope off a section of the restaurant for those who were there for the luncheon, then have them come up to the fashion show room after they ate. We were able to set the room up without luncheon tables and were then able to accomodate everyone on the waiting list as well. IBC staffers got on the phone and called everyone on the waiting list. All of this was accomplished within an hour! ![]() We had a wonderful group of mothers lining up the models, helping with the younger children - we had 8 children, between 4 - 9 years old, in the show as well as the 25 teenage dancer/ models. Travis, Cheryl, Carole and I did fittings the day before the first fashion show and organized who was to wear what. Most of the models were available for both shows, thank goodness. ![]() The second show was not tied to a luncheon. It was on the last Friday afternoon of the IBC, and there was not a performance that night so we had a full house of dancers, directors, teachers, and ballet lovers. This show, staged in a partnering.
Every one of the Project Tutu competitors has since told me how
much theylarge ballroom,
also included the Project Tutu Competitors and our esteemed jury.
We were honored to have judges who had been involved in the
professional ballet world for many years, and knew how a tutu should
fit and why certain things are so important to movement and learned and grew from their talks with the judges. ![]() Each
competitor had to pick a bag full of fabrics. They could see the
color of the net, but that was all. When they opened their bag,
they found that they had to make a choice between two possible ballets
for which to design their tutu. Next, they had to pick bodice
fabric from the 40 pieces of silk, brocade, etc. that we provided.
Carole Klinko - Esmerelda, Chris Takashima - Le Corsaire, Raye Ryan - Sugar Plum Fairy, Ann-Margaret Holden - Ugly Stepsister, Nancy Ford Gallegher - Carabosse, Brenda Carr - Snow Queen Cindi Tucker - Sleeping Beauty - 16th birthday ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Brenda Smith, who was one of the winners of an earlier Facebook contest to have a tutu included in the Tutu Fashion Shows, Cheryl, and Judy, a friend of competitor, Brenda Carr's, were all there to lend a hand with last minute hand stitching for the competitors during the last hours. All of their models showed up on time for their second and final fittings, and the models who did not show up for the first fitting showed up, too! Their director had mixed up the times. Cheryl and I switched a couple of things around and managed to find a tutu for each of them to wear. They were so disappointed that they did not get to work with the designers, and it really was not their fault, so we were very happy that we could still include them in the show. ![]() ![]() ![]() Heading our panel of judges was Bruce Marks, who also headed the jury for the IBC. Bruce was Artistic Director of Boston Ballet and Orlando Ballet. He has staged many ballets and taught many of the finest dancers in the world. Other panelists included Christopher Fleming, well-known choreographer and master teacher, and Gizella Watkowsky, former Prima Ballerina with National Ballet of Canada and well-known ballet teacher. Christopher and Gizella were also
the Competitor Evaluators. Mme. Peff Modelski, head of the
Teachers Workshop at the IBC and world - renowned ballet teacher,
Costume Designer Marianne Mahoney, who is also the niece of
Thalia Mara, famous ballerina who brought the IBC to Jackson, and
Travis Halsey, assistant to the head of Joffrey's costume shop, and
also a wonderful costume designer and pattern maker, rounded out our
jury. The judges spoke with each Project Tutu competitor, putting them on the spot with tough questions. The competitors had to leave the room with the judges after presenting their tutus. At that time, we continued with the fashion show. At the end of the show, The judges and competitors came back in and Bruce Marks announced the winner -- Brenda Carr, of Fort Mill, SC, for her hand-dyed Snow Queen tutu. Congrats to Brenda, and ALL the competitors of the first ever Project Tutu! I am in awe of you all. ![]() ![]() Each competitor will receive a tutu kit for participating, and our winner, Brenda Carr, received a $500 gift certificate to Tutu,Com, and tickets to the IBC Gala. If you would like to see some of the Tutu Fashion Show, go to You Tube and type in "Lunch with the IBC." Also, the second fashion show with the Project Tutu competitors was filmed by Dance Channel TV, but, as of yet, we have not heard when it will be shown. Send us your photos!
