'Tailoring for Dance'... sounds kind of dry doesn't it? But this is actually very much a very fun class!

You all know that Classical tutus aren't the only kind of dance costume. And you know those 'other' costumes don't really come from the 'second-hand' store or from someone's attic.

'Nutcracker' Tunic, by Jeremy Barney
'Nutcracker'

This class is all about creating those 'other' costumes - professional-quality 'tailored' garments. For 2012, the accent is on men's tailored costumes, with your choice of 2 high-demand always-needed projects - 1) a military-style 'Nutcracker' jacket, and 2) an advanced-level classical doublet suitable for the Cavalier from "The Nutcracker", the Prince from "The Sleeping Beauty", and many other elegant, classical roles.

As a project, the military-style jacket is on the 'easy to intermediate' level. The Cavalier jacket is a very advanced and time-consuming project.

Taught by Mr. Jeremy Barney, this course will introduce you to the tailoring skills and concepts used by the Master Costumers of our artform. With Mr. Barney's guidance, you will explore three tailoring methodologies as adapted for dance:  Traditional tailoring, Speed tailoring, and Japanese tailoring.
'Cavalier' Tunic, by Jeremy Barney
'Cavalier'

You will investigate these techniques by creating one of these costumes, complete with tailored facings, collar, sleeves, etc., with basic tailored structural elements and lining.

And of course, the basic techniques you learn here easily transfer to many styles of tailored garments used in Ballet and dance - specifically, men's tunics and jackets, and many women's structured garments, including bodices, jackets, and period dresses.

While it all sounds very serious and very heavy, we promise you will absolutely enjoy this class! Jeremy is an amazing, fun, and very amusing teacher, perfectly suited to making such a difficult subject really interesting and exciting! You will leave this class smiling and laughing, but you will also have learned many of the tailoring techniques of the masters that will help you improve every aspect of your costuming life.

And as always, we supply all the materials needed to complete your project.
